Homeless At Peachtree-Pine Shelter Will Be Transitioned In ‘Humane Manner’: Group

ATLANTA, GA — In the wake of news that one of Atlanta’s most visible homeless shelters will close its doors this fall, its purchaser, Central Atlanta Progress, and seller, the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless, now are faced with the task of finding other places for hundreds of men and women to stay.

Both organizations vow to find "other suitable facilities" for the homeless, which has been a dilemma for the city’s leaders and a thorn in the side of the city’s business leaders, who see the prominence of homelessness as a direct deterrent to business.

The facility will sell for a reported $9.7 million, according to news reports. Pressure from the city along with the rising costs of real estate in Midtown have also played a part in making the pale-colored building an anomaly.

The August 28 closure of the Peachtree-Pine site is a major development for real estate watchers as the tract is considered one of the most high-profile sites at the cusp of Midtown and downtown Atlanta. The shelter has also been tied up in a lawsuit related to unpaid bills and an impending sale that was blocked by a judge. The structure’s new owner, Central Atlanta Progress (CAP), said in a statement Friday that the business group will do what it can to transition residents of the shelter.

"The parties involved in the Peachtree-Pine Homeless Shelter lawsuit have settled their differences over various legal matters. As part of the settlement, the Peachtree-Pine property will be sold to Central Atlanta Progress. The settlement agreement also authorizes Central Atlanta Progress, working closely with The Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless, to proceed with plans to place the current residents of the Peachtree-Pine shelter into other suitable facilities," CAP said.

As part of the deal, the 100,000-square-foot property will cease operations as a homeless shelter "with the exception of the current residents awaiting transition to other facilities," CAP said.

The Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless said Friday that the sale of the property will not deter it from its mission to assist the city’s most vulnerable people: the homeless.

"The settlement to which the Task Force has agreed will provide substantial financial resources to continue our two-fold mission of providing direct homeless services and advocating for policies and programs that attack the underlying causes of homelessness," Task Force Chairman Chuck Steffen said in a statement, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "These are the lack of affordable housing, the shortage of living-wage jobs, and the history of racism that blocks access to both housing and jobs."

Clean Water Coalition to honor 13 entities that protect water; five are in Atlanta

The South Fork Conservancy, a group of volunteers who joined in an effort to restore Peachtree Creek in Atlanta, is one of the 13 recipients of a new program by the Georgia Water Coalition to recognize efforts to improve the waters of Georgia.

The coalition may best be known for its annual report, The Dirty Dozen. The list shines a light on entities the coalition has identified as major polluters of state waters.

By honoring good deeds that are detailed in a report, the new program, “highlights extraordinary efforts on the part of businesses, industries, local governments, non-profit organizations, and individuals to protect the water and natural resources of Georgia,” according to a statement from the Georgia Water Coalition.

A total of five entities are to be recognized for their work in metro Atlanta. In addition to South Fork Conservancy, the coalition intends to honor Georgia Tech, the City of Atlanta, Cox Enterprises, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Sponsors of the March 8 event include a total of 33 businesses, non-profits and individuals. Most are involved in sustainability efforts of various stripes, and include the City of Atlanta’s Watershed Department, Cox Enterprises and Greenlaw and the Southern Environmental Law Center.

The honorees include:

City of Atlanta; Cox Enterprises; Georgia Department of Natural Resources; Georgia Institute of Technology; Ladybug Farms; Macon Water Authority; Mark Masters; Georgia Rep. John Meadows (R-Calhoun); Scott Bridge Company; Solar Crowdsource; South Fork Conservancy; Storm Water Systems; United Parcel Service.

Here are highlights regarding honorees recognized for their work in metro Atlanta:

City of Atlanta

“During the past decade, the City of Atlanta has become a national leader in addressing water pollution issues associated with stormwater runoff, and in 2013, the City Council adopted one of the most far-reaching post-development stormwater management ordinances in the country. Since its adoption, more than 3,500 projects have been permitted using the city’s mandatory green infrastructure standards, equating to the removal of approximately 700 million gallons of polluted run off from streams annually.”

Cox Enterprises

“Imagine detailing 62,000 vehicles each year. That’s the task facing Manheim Georgia, which is part of the world’s leader in vehicle remarketing services. … Each day a steady stream of cars flows through Manheim Georgia’s reconditioning facility and a steady stream of pressurized water is used to tidy up those vehicles. The used water is collected, equalized, treated with micro-organisms that remove oil, soap and grease, run through filters to remove additional solids and finally treated with reverse osmosis membranes to create reusable water.”

Georgia Department of Natural Resources, in Paulding County

“Unlike its muddy neighboring streams that drain other parts of fast-growing Paulding County, Raccoon Creek empties clear, sediment-free water into the Etowah River in Bartow County. It owes its health to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and a host of other partners that during the past decade have helped preserve 43 percent of the land drained by Raccoon Creek and restored portions of the creek to protect an important piece of Georgia’s natural heritage – fish and mussels that are found only in the Etowah River, and no where else in the world.”

Georgia Institute of Technology – Tanyard Creek

“Georgia Tech has been a leader in green infrastructure since it built its irrst LEED certified building in 2003. Since then, the Institute has taken on the challenge of managing the rain that falls on the campus. Now that rain is collected and conserved, and the campus has become a veritable zoo of green infrastructure projects that save water and keep pollution out of local streams. The campus’ green solutions to stormwater runoff are so numerous, faculty and students have even developed a smartphone app that allows anyone to take a virtual tour of Tech’s innovative approaches to managing stormwater.”

South Fork Conservancy

“Peachtree Creek, once a waterway where people gathered at ferries, farms, mills and baptism pools, was bridged, bulldozed and forgotten, its banks overgrown

with kudzu and privet and inaccessible except for the hardiest of explorers.
In stepped a group of citizens that saw the potential for Peachtree Creek to reconnect communities—from apartment complexes to reclaimed industrial sites—through a trail and parks system that would reunite Atlantans with this historic creek. Since 2008, the South Fork Conservancy (SFC) has established some ve miles of creekside trails and restored dozens of acres of land through the removal of invasive plants and reintroduction of native species. The group even played a role in the remediation of a 12-acre hazardous waste site that now is home to one of SFC’s signature trails.”

Note to readers:

Tickets to the March 8 event are priced at $150 each and include dinner and general admission to the event at Mason Fine Art Gallery, 415 Plasters Ave., Atlanta.

New Housing Developments Opening in Peachtree Corners

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — Leaders in Peachtree Corners last week cut the ribbon on a pair of new housing developments on Spalding Drive.

Developer Peachtree Residential Properties unveiled model homes at Oglethorpe, a single-family home development and Duke Reserve, a townhome community.

Oglethorpe is next to Weslyan School and Duke Reserve is across the street from the Peachtree Corners post office.

Both communities offer full landscape maintenance.

"When we developed the city’s comprehensive plan, a housing option that offers smaller lots without sacrificing square footage was in short supply," said Mayor Mike Mason. "These two new developments will help fill that need. We are happy to welcome Peachtree Residential Properties to Peachtree Corners."

Both are gated communities and homes have four-sided brick exteriors. When development is complete, Oglethorpe will have 19 homes, some with basements and three-car garages. Prices begin in the $700,000s.

Duke Reserve will consist of 25 two-story townhomes with two-car garages and floor plans with master bedrooms on the main level. Prices start in the mid $500,000s.
